James River Ecology School
Turkey Island, Virginia
Built at historic Presquile National Wildlife Refuge, the project entailed the renovation of a former refuge manager’s house into an education center and a new “bunkhouse”. The facility’s purpose is environmental education and inspiration of young people to become future stewards of the natural world. The buildings reinforce this ethic through low energy/passive design, solar energy harvest, rainwater collection, composting toilets, and rain gardens.
